Quicktime is by far the most popular video file type developed by apple for macintosh users, but is also compatible with the IBM-compatible machines and the windows operating systems. The hardware and software you need to digitize video into the Quicktime format is very inexpensive, compared to the mpeg format. All data storage in modern times are done on disc, be it a computer hard drive or a CD-R disc. Blu-ray and HD-DVD have upped the ante when it comes to the amount of data that you can hold on a disc, but at some time they will eventually become obsolete. Right now our data storage needs are currently met, but as the amount of data available continues to rise, storage technology must evolve with it. The next generation of storage technology is going to be holographic data storage. It sounds pretty futuristic, what is holographic storage?

With CD-R and DVD-R technology, data is stored on the surface of the disc as distinct magnetic or optical changes. With holographic data storage, an entire page of information is stored at once as an optical interference pattern within a thick, photosensitive optical material.

How do they do this?
This is done by intersecting two coherent laser beams, the object and reference beams, within the storage material. The object beam contains all the information needing to be stored, while the reference beam is designed to be simple to produce. The resulting interference between the beams causes chemical and/or physical changes in the photosensitive medium that the data is being stored on. Basically “burning” the information to the storage medium, this mark is called the grating. When the grating is illuminated by one of the two waves that were used to record the information, the light is refracted in a way that the other wave is reconstructed. These gratings can be stacked or superimposed in the same thick piece of media, as long as there is a distinguishing spacing or direction, allowing the stacked bits of data to be accessed independently. In addition to larger storage capabilities, holographic storage also boasts to accelerate data transfer rates to about one billion bits per second and reduce access times to just tens of microseconds.

1. Larger storage capacity – Some companies are developing a technology that enables the storage of between 100GB and 1TB of data. Compare this to Blu-ray and HD-DVD, which max out at 50GB. Amazing leap in the amount of data you can store on one piece of media.

2. Accelerated data transfer – The holographic data storage medium in the works boasts data transmission speeds of 100Mbps to 1Gbps. The new HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs clock in at 36.55Mbps, which is only a fraction of the holographic data storage transfer rate.

Well, if you’re like me, you learned quite a bit about a new technology from this short article. This new technology is quite a ways off from being accessible to the common consumer, but some companies are in the process of developing holographic data storage for the corporate sector. The ability to make music listening portable has been in the consumer’s line of sight since the first Sony Walkman emerged, but since then portable players have been shrinking in size. Over the past few years, I have been very interested in new technology and the future advancements it may bring to business owners & their industries. The most surprising project I have come across is from a technology group located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This ‘technology think-tank’ group, known as Fireseed, collaborating with other techs in the Wisconsin area, plans to build a Supercomputer. In fact, this Supercomputer will be one of the top 500 in the world. Its conceptual name is the FS3 Obsidian, which sounds rather cool.
The FS3 Obsidian project will offer the business industries much, in terms of being able to do research involving complicated mathematical computations and simulations that can not be done by conventional means. What that means to us is faster, safer, newer, and better technology to be used for such things as important medical breakthroughs, nuclear physics, or even film studios. Who wouldn’t want to see a faster cure for cancer or the ultimate connection speed for internet use?

The neat thing is that this Supercomputer will use GPUs, which to those of us who are not tech savy, are graphics cards. This allows the Supercomputer to become much more powerful for a fraction of the price. Conventional computers all use CPUs. Think about the power of your home computer times a thousand. That’s the processing power of just one of these cards!

The premise of the FS3 Obsidian project is that the power of the Supercomputer will be available not only to businesses, for the obvious advantages, but also to University students who want to excel in the direction where new technology is going. They will be trained and educated in the use and benefits of the Supercomputer.

The FS3 project resulted from discussions about needed high performance computing resources among tech community members in Wisconsin, primarily the Milwaukee area. One of the main projects which require the supercomputer resources is a nuclear fusion reactor simulator project being worked on by a Milwaukee member of the Fireseed group.

The project’s short term goal is to finalize the hardware design of the streaming supercomputer, assemble it and develop the programming needed to use the FS3 for its initial computational work. That work is targeted to be completed within twelve months of receiving project funding. The FS3 Obsidian project will be managed by a non-profit organization.

I, along with numerous other I.T. professionals know what tremendous potential a Supercomputer of this magnitude can do to usher businesses into the next era in future technology. If important research can be done in 3 days versus 60 days, think of the advantages this Supercomputer could bring to fields like the medical community. I, for one cannot wait to see the end results.

The Wii, the fifth home video game console from Nintendo, is the direct successor to the Nintendo Game Cube. Set yourself up with a Hotmail, Yahoo or any other free email account and use it as a spam holder account i.e. use it on all those popups or sign up forms that you *suspect* may try to spam you. You can then periodically check your free email account for both legitimate and spam email and
delete the rubbish you don"t want. This single step can save you countless spam related headaches.

3. Use a disposable email address
You could also try a disposable e-mail address from www.spamgourmet.com. This is a brilliant idea. Once you"ve registered your forwarding email address (your personal
email address) with them you can then create
self-destructing email addresses that stop working after receiving a specific number of emails.

4. Use a free spam filter.
Unfortunately even when you follow all the correct steps you can still wind up getting junk email. There"s only solution at that point - install a spam filter on your PC.

Club Tech is an innovative technology program being implemented at more than 3,300 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide. A partnership with Microsoft has provided a 0 million, five-year grant to outfit the Clubs with the latest software, a comprehensive technology-oriented curriculum and technical training for Club staff.

Historically, Boys & Girls Clubs have been known as safe, after-school havens where parents could send their kids to play sports, swim and get help with their homework. But now they are much more than that. The Club Tech program allows the organization to help prepare young people for a world in which technology has become increasingly important.

When I started coming to the club, I had never seen so many computers, says 16-year-old Joel Bueno, a regular participant in the Club Tech program in Mesa, Ariz. I was impressed -- we dont even have that many at school.

Club Tech programs help kids learn how to use PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and the Internet for everything from book reports to research papers to career exploration. The Digital Arts Suite, a component of the Club Tech program, explores Web page design, desktop publishing, digital photography, digital movie making and electronic music making. The programs are all age-appropriate, interactive and most importantly, fun.
