How to Put Video on your Website: Video File Types

By Maria Markella [ 05/01/2007 ]
[ viewed 148 times ]

If you want to put video on your website you must have a good knowledge of the basic video file types. What video file type to use? what are the pros and cons of each file type? These are just some of the questions you should ask yourself before proceeding with video implementation on your webpages.

There are three basic video file types on the internet. Mpeg, AVI and Quicktime. I believe the Quicktime file type is the most popular since a lot of huge entertainment and news sites use it exclusively on their web pages.

AVI is the oldest of the three main file types. It is a windows oriented video format but it's not the most popular because of the sound and video compatibility and synchronizing problems. Because the Quicktime format can be used on either a windows or a macintosh computer, the AVI video file type loses it's popularity every day.

The mpeg format is a popular video file type that uses it's high output quality to increase it's popularity over the Quicktime format. Mpeg is used on video games, cd-roms and other media that require high output quality. One disadvantage of mpeg is that it sacrifices file size to gain in digital quality. The mpeg video files are usually large.

Another disadvantage of the mpeg format is that you really need time and sophisticated hardware and software to convert plain video into mpeg. And let's not forget that the mpeg format is not supported by apple and macintosh meaning that if you put mpeg video on your website, those users with macintosh will not be able to see it.

Quicktime is by far the most popular video file type developed by apple for macintosh users, but is also compatible with the IBM-compatible machines and the windows operating systems. The hardware and software you need to digitize video into the Quicktime format is very inexpensive, compared to the mpeg format. So its much easier and cheaper to create video and put it on your website using the Quicktime format.

Do you know what are the offers that satellite tv gives you? It will definitely give you and your family more fun and excitement. Not only that you can watch hundreds of channels, complete movie and sports packages, but also those channels that are available from across the country or even across the globe.

There are times when you are so much busy and you intend to miss your favorite show. That show may be your ever favorite and you haven't miss any episode of it in your entire life. But with satellite tv, you better not to worry at all. Because you could have both the East Coast and the West Coast versions of a channel so you can watch it later.

Compare to cable tv, satellite tv offers many more channels with some packages and hundreds more of channels. Other than that, we all know that cable is not available in some areas in the country. And sure you don't like that. Of course you can't stick watching with just one channel and you definitely want to have more. Satellite tv is one great choice. Unlike with cable, which typically only has one provider per area, in sateliite tv you can choose from any number of satellite television providers.

Although for some reasons, cable tv may have its advantages, but some of cable customers actually experience more frequent loss of their programming than satellite television customers. And charges for installation for hooking the cable up to more than one TV. So that's not good to hear right?

Yes there are so many satellite tv providers out there, but which one would you choose? We all know that competitions are every where and it is also common in choosing satellite tv providers. But you don't have to worry, you will surely get a better price, more than what cable tv can offer.

Just try to ask these questions: First, are there channels that are not available in cable that you really want? Second, are there shows that you are craving to watch and you don't want to miss any episode on them? And lastly, are you willing to pay extra for local channels or can you find a satellite television package that includes them at no extra cost? Think about it.

Everywhere, there are reviews from different consumer that you can find from magazines, internet and many other. Reviews of the top satellite television provider such as Dish Network. Reviews from fellow consumers will make you easy to decide.

Choosing satellite tv from any of its providers will always assure you to enjoy and love what you are watching. You can get you favorite channels such as, family channels, movie channels, sports channels, international channels, HDTV channels and even more. Satellite tv has all these that you will watch and sure you'll not gonna let them go away.

Basics of PHP

By Jeremy Gislason [ 04/11/2007 ]
[ viewed 38 times ]

Practical Uses of PHP

It almost goes without saying that you will want your business website to be compelling, interactive, and secure. All of these characteristics will make your website more effective at bringing in and keeping customers. But how to go about it in a way that is stable, cost-effective, and easy to manage? One popular solution is to use the server-side scripting language PHP to help you solve those problems.

What is PHP?

Created in 1995, PHP originally stood for "Personal Home Page", however it is now generally understood to mean "PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor". It was originally designed to create dynamic or more interactive web pages. It is a widely-used, open-source, general-purpose scripting language. PHP is a "high-level" language, meaning that it's generally more human-friendly (and easier to learn) than other programming languages such as C, ASP or ASP.net.

PHP was originally designed for use in Web site development, but rapidly grew to become a much more robust language. PHP's primary use is as an "embedded" scripting language, which means that the actual PHP code is embedded in HTML code. When used in this way, PHP enables your web server to process web pages before they're displayed in the user's web browser.
Benefits of PHP

PHP is popular because it can be embedded directly into HTML coding.

PHP can be used on all major operating systems and is supported on most web servers.

PHP's main focus is development for the web, so it has a quick development time and can solve scenarios much quicker than some of the other web design languages.

The latest version of PHP is a very stable and mature language used for web programming much like Java and Microsoft C#.

It is open source so it is free!

Database: It is very easy to write simple scripts which allow your Web site to interact with a database.

Cross-Platform: Both the PHP engine and the PHP code can be used on almost any platform, making it extremely versatile.

Development Tools: You only need a text editor to work on PHP; you do not need any development environment or compilers.

What can you do with PHP?

PHP generally runs on a web server, taking PHP code as its input and creating Web pages as output, however you can also use it for command-line scripting and client-side GUI applications. PHP is an extremely versatile language which enables you to create high-end, stable Web sites with plenty of bells and whistles. Here are just a few of the things you can do with PHP:

Make HTML Web Forms

Store Information in Databases

Remember Web site visitors (cookies and sessions)

Work with Arrays

Work with Files (File Management and downloads)

Parsing and Generating XML (also useful for large quantities of products on e-commerce)

Check which browser your visitor is using

How does PHP Work?

As its name ("PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor") suggests, PHP derives its power by "preprocessing" hypertext on the server side. This generally means that when the PHP script (saved as a .php file) runs on your web server, it performs the programmed actions, and returns HTML code that will then be sent back to your customer's web browser. The PHP script itself is not included in the HTML that is sent to the browser, so the PHP code is invisible and secure to the user.

For example, let's consider the following simple PHP statement. (This example is merely to show the basic syntax of PHP in action. Any detailed discussion of PHP code is beyond the scope of this article.)

In this statement, is the closing tag, and echo is a PHP instruction that tells PHP to output the text that follows it as plain HTML code. The PHP software processes the PHP statement and outputs the following:

Hello World

This is a regular HTML statement that is delivered to the user’s browser. The PHP statement itself is not delivered to the browser, so the user never sees any PHP statements.

Using PHP to Improve Your Website.

PHP has many capabilities features designed specifically for use in Web sites, including the following:

1. Securing Your Website.

PHP can be used to secure your website (or certain areas of your website) so that your customer must enter a valid username and password. This can be used to reward preferred customers and to build an exclusive "membership" component of your business.

2. Working with Web Forms.

PHP can display an HTML form and process the information that the user types in. This can be an excellent way to learn more about your customers by asking them to provide profile information, and to collect information about their specific interests.

3. Communicate with Your Databases.

PHP is particularly adept at interacting with your databases, and storing information from the user or retrieving information that is displayed to the user. PHP handles connecting to the database and communicating with it, so it's not necessary to know all of the technical details for connecting to or exchanging messages with the database. You tell PHP the name of the database and where it is, and PHP handles the details. All major databases are currently supported by PHP.

4. Customer Loyalty Functions.

You can also use PHP to create a number of different functionalities on your website that will further help you to build customer loyalty, including interactive polls, a guestbook, and a message board.

The popularity of PHP continues to grow rapidly because it has many advantages over other technical solutions. PHP is fast (because it's embedded in the HTML code, the time to process and load a Web page is relatively short), PHP is free (it is open-source software), and PHP is versatile (is runs on a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and most Unix variants).

Perhaps most importantly, PHP is a very well-established language. There are many user-run Internet communities that make very large amounts of information (and scripts) available. With so much experience behind it, using PHP for certain dynamic features can be a cost-effective and low-hassle way of increasing the stability of your website.

Holographic Data Storage – The Next Generation

By Jason Cole [ 07/11/2006 ]
[ viewed 256 times ]

All data storage in modern times are done on disc, be it a computer hard drive or a CD-R disc. Blu-ray and HD-DVD have upped the ante when it comes to the amount of data that you can hold on a disc, but at some time they will eventually become obsolete. Right now our data storage needs are currently met, but as the amount of data available continues to rise, storage technology must evolve with it. The next generation of storage technology is going to be holographic data storage. It sounds pretty futuristic, what is holographic storage?

With CD-R and DVD-R technology, data is stored on the surface of the disc as distinct magnetic or optical changes. With holographic data storage, an entire page of information is stored at once as an optical interference pattern within a thick, photosensitive optical material.

How do they do this?
This is done by intersecting two coherent laser beams, the object and reference beams, within the storage material. The object beam contains all the information needing to be stored, while the reference beam is designed to be simple to produce. The resulting interference between the beams causes chemical and/or physical changes in the photosensitive medium that the data is being stored on. Basically “burning” the information to the storage medium, this mark is called the grating. When the grating is illuminated by one of the two waves that were used to record the information, the light is refracted in a way that the other wave is reconstructed. These gratings can be stacked or superimposed in the same thick piece of media, as long as there is a distinguishing spacing or direction, allowing the stacked bits of data to be accessed independently. In addition to larger storage capabilities, holographic storage also boasts to accelerate data transfer rates to about one billion bits per second and reduce access times to just tens of microseconds.

The benefits

1. Larger storage capacity – Some companies are developing a technology that enables the storage of between 100GB and 1TB of data. Compare this to Blu-ray and HD-DVD, which max out at 50GB. Amazing leap in the amount of data you can store on one piece of media.

2. Accelerated data transfer – The holographic data storage medium in the works boasts data transmission speeds of 100Mbps to 1Gbps. The new HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs clock in at 36.55Mbps, which is only a fraction of the holographic data storage transfer rate.

Well, if you’re like me, you learned quite a bit about a new technology from this short article. This new technology is quite a ways off from being accessible to the common consumer, but some companies are in the process of developing holographic data storage for the corporate sector. Technology is a strange beast, always changing, always mutating. The sky is the limit, and only time will tell where we’ll be headed after the rise and fall of this yet-to-be-seen data technology.

From Mini to Nano

By Ted Belfoure [ 24/04/2006 ]
[ viewed 416 times ]

The ability to make music listening portable has been in the consumer’s line of sight since the first Sony Walkman emerged, but since then portable players have been shrinking in size. From the Minidisk player to the iPod, music playing media have gotten progressively smaller, in an effort to fit in with the hectic lifestyles that prefer as little baggage as possible to accompany them. For most people, the iPod was thought to be as good as music portability gets. That is until the development of the iPod Mini and its successor, the iPod Nano.

The iPod is undoubtedly a dream of portability for the music lover, allowing him or her to carry enormous amounts of music in a hand held device. But for some, the device, about ten centimetres in length, six in width and around one and a half in depth was too burdensome still, and so the iPod mini was born.

As in most areas of electronic engineering, improvements are made at a rate that is astounding to the consumer, and new versions of electronic products become available quicker than you can master the now obsolete item you bought. So it might have seemed when the iPod Mini was replaced by the iPod Nano, but there have been improvements made between these items that does make the Nano more desirable to many iPod users. If the selling point of the Mini was it’s reduced size then the Nano certainly outdid its predecessor – it is sixty-two percent smaller that the iPod that came before. The Nano manifestation of the iPod music player also includes a color screen, something that was missing in the Mini, so the discontinuation of the old to make way for the new genuinely represented an advancement in the smallest of the small portable music playing appliances.

While the iPod Nano includes a smaller storage capacity that its full sized counterpart – twenty gigabytes or forty compared to the iPod’s thirty or sixty, depending on the price you are prepared to pay – its tiny size and light weight make it an enormously appealing music player to those who really do like to travel light. Ideal for those who like to walk or jog, or those who simply like to get up and go, the iPod Nano really does allow you move without anything to weigh you down.

What your Operating System does when you request for deleting data?Is the permanent deletion, Is really a Permanent deletion of your data? Then what does your Operating system do when you request to erase the data beyond recovery...Let’s understand what is Deletion? Our operating system, provides us with two type of deletion i.e. Temporary Deletion Permanent DeletionTemporary DeletionWhen we simply delete a data, by Delete Button, or by Selecting a file with Right click and then selecting delete option from the popup menu. Both of the procedure will remove the file from the specific location and send it to Recycle Bin. This method is called as Temporary deletion, as this files can be restored from the Recycle bin.Permanent DeletionWhen we delete a file or folder using Shift + Delete. This method is called as Permanent deletion of data. This files is not recoverable according to your operating system. Is this True? If not, then why?No, you can recover this data very easily with many undelete utilities available in the market. Like Stellar phoenix deleted file recovery. Lets answer this question why this file is recoverable. When we do Shift + Delete, the operating system simply flags that file as deleted. And this file / folder does not appear in the recycle bin, however the data is still present in your hard drive. What wiping software does? Such that the data is beyond recovery!Let me answer this question by taking an example of a Wiping tool i.e. Stellar WipeCheck out what this software doesStellar Wipe 3.0 is a comprehensive solution to maintain your computer privacy by wiping worthless yet sensitive information off your system, beyond data recovery. All your on & offline activities are recorded by your computer, whether it is the >> Temporary internet files>> Cookies>> History>> Typed URL’s>> Recently opened documents, etc. The utility destroys data from already-erased files, the traces of which might still be present on your hard disk, in the Trash folder, Windows Registry or in the unused hard disk areas.Stellar Wipe is a simple yet powerful and effective data cleansing software.
